Amma Don

Reykjavík, Iceland

A brass lion knocker guards the door at Amma Don, the speakeasy attached to Óx – an accomplished fine dining restaurant that only seats 17 guests. Press the lion’s tongue and step into what feels like another world: a cosy, brown-and-beige simulacrum of a 1960s living room, complete with textured wallpaper, kitsch paintings and a TV that plays old talk shows. It’s a tribute to chef-owner’s Thrainn Freyr Vigfusson’s grandmother’s house (‘amma’ is granny is Icelandic, while don indicates she’s the boss). Settle into a suitably retro leather chair and prepare to be impressed by the cocktails, whether it’s a reworked negroni, with notes of brown butter and rye, or a clever twist on a whisky sour, infused with oats and jasmine. If you’ve got a reservation at Óx, you’ll be whisked through the bookcase’s hidden door to the dining room; if you haven’t, settle in for another drink and enjoy the time-warp vibes.
