Thai House

Tel Aviv, Israel

Kitted out in bamboo and wicker top to bottom, stepping into Thai house is truly like stepping into another world. It’s one of the best Asian restaurants in Israel, in situ a few streets back from Bugrashov Beach and the promenade since 1996 – before Thai food had made a name for itself in the country. Today, locals flock for the bold, authentic flavours, convivial atmosphere and the chefs’ keen eye for detail. Fruit and vegetables faithful to the nation’s food are grown at the restaurant’s farm outside the city and the ubiquitous coconut milk comes freshly squeezed hourly. Navigating all that’s great about the country’s cuisine, the menu features street food as well as larger home-style dishes. Som tam, pad Thai and spicy larb are a given, while seasonal morning glory is flame-fried with crushed garlic in tao tiyao sauce. Whole-fried sea bass topped with nuts with fragrant tamarind and lemongrass chilli sauce makes a true centrepiece, and less familiar sai kok (sausages) from the northerly Issan province form part of the gastronomic education.
