Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Collection
Florence, Italy
Auberge Collection makes smart choices when selecting locations for its hotels, and the brand’s Italian debut is a prime example. Set back from Florence's crowded centre, the resort takes up residence in a 19th century boarding school in the northern hillside, with a vantage point over historical landmarks such as the Duomo. The building’s Renaissance stylings were maintained during the restoration, with frescoes and coffered wood ceilings on show, and former classrooms have been expertly transformed into five-star suites with hand-painted walls, stone-clad bathrooms and wine cellars. Being called into the headmaster’s office won’t fill you with dread this time around, with the room remodelled into a suave bar and cigar lounge, while cafeteria-style food is swapped for delicious Tuscan classics. The hotel’s more remote location affords it more space for luxury facilities – from Baroque gardens and an outdoor pool flanked by querce (oak trees) to a tranquil spa – while a shuttle whisks guests to the city centre in just 15 minutes. It’s easy to get onboard with this new lease of luxury.
