Joia is a ground-breaking destination, having launched in 1989, in 1996 it was Europe's first entirely vegetarian venue to gain a Michelin Star. Under the careful guidance of Chef Patron Pietro Leemann the restaurant has retained its accolade for over 25 years while moving with the times to create a menu that is now 80% vegan and gluten free. The restaurant's plant-based ethos is far from austerity though, with indulgent and complex dishes such as braised tempeh, raw and confit Costoluto tomato, piattone beans and grilled yellow zucchini, cherrywood smoke, basil pesto and fermented vegetables or a dessert of Gianduja chocolate egg, millet biscuit, seeds and chocolate, coconut mousse, berries and coffee sauce. The setting has an almost churchlike feeling of calm with exposed plaster walls, vaulted ceilings and organic wood textures throughout, continuing Leemann's mindful mission.
