The Ritz-Carlton draws inspiration from Fukuoka’s maritime past for its hotel on Kyushu Island, with natural materials paying tribute to the city’s historic status as an entry point for the Silk Road trade routes. While the façade is utterly modern, located in a glass 24-storey tower, interiors are far more organic – think silk, natural woods, woven bamboo and rattan furnishings. Experiences, too, are shaped by the city’s history – guests are invited to create stamp books using Hakata-ori silk, which they can then bring on visits to shrines and temples. The hotel’s bayfront location has influenced its dining scene too – with seafood sourced from the Genkai Sea, and wagyu beef from Iki Island.
