Lurra

Kyoto, Japan

Its name translating from the Basque to “the Earth”, Lurra transports diners on a thrilling culinary odyssey, combining local, Kyoto-sourced ingredients with global influences to deliver its own unique brand of Nordic-leaning cuisine. Chef-founder Jacob Kear (ex-Noma) was drawn to Japan’s former capital not just because of its strong associations with traditional Japanese craftsmanship, but because of the quality of fresh produce readily available. Housed in a historic townhouse in Higashiyama Ward, the contemporary dining room features an open kitchen and wooden counter seating for 10, with two dinner services nightly. Expect creative, fire-cooked, dishes of hyper seasonal – and often foraged – fare, with spices, fermented seasonings, cured meat and pickles all employed to winning effect. The drinks menu offers French and Italian wines by the bottle, plus a good selection of sake.
