Mizai

Kyoto, Japan

Allow plenty of time to find the beautiful house surrounded by greenery in the expansive and peaceful Maruyama Park in the Kyoto’s traditional Gion district. Once inside, take a seat at the 15-spot counter and watch chef Hitoshi Ishihara and his team prepare tea kaiseki, beginning with rice, soup and a side dish on a wooden tray and working through sashimi and other delights, before ending with matcha tea. All diners are seated promptly at 6pm for the three-hour meal, so be sure to arrive on time – and dress formally. The restaurant only accepts cash and photography is discouraged. Mizai means ‘no limits’.
