Bab Alyamen Alsa-eed
Amman, Jordan
Among the very first Yemeni restaurants to appear in Amman, its name is attributed to the Old Yemen Gate, which is one of the oldest historical landmarks in the Arab world. You can’t miss the busy restaurant from the outside, with its name emblazoned across the façade, fairy lights glowing; while inside it is more pared back, with separate floors and booths to ensure privacy for families. The menu features traditional home-cooked dishes from Yemen and is divided into sections: appetisers, mutton, chicken, seafood and sides. Spices such as cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, saffron and the secret Bab Alyaman Alsa’eed mix feature prominently. Mutabbaq, the famous stuffed pancakes, are particularly popular; have them savoury or with banana and honey. The bread is served warm and flaky, the smoothie menu is impressive and service is swift.
