Fadel

Beirut, Lebanon

Opened in 1975 by Emile Fadel and today run by his son and other family members, Fadel is set in a fragrant pine forest on the outskirts of Bikfaya village, around 25km from Beirut, with panoramic views over the coastline and sea. Something of a time capsule, the restaurant’s interior features chequerboard-tiled floors and bare brick walls adorned with old black-and-white photographs and paintings of the area. In summer, though, it’s the large outdoor patio that people flock to, having come from far and wide to feast on expertly cooked traditional Lebanese dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Popular menu choices include the mashawi (barbecued chicken, lamb or pork), soujouk (spicy fermented sausage) and mini kebbeh (croquettes of spiced ground meat with onions and bulgur wheat). End on a sweet note with icy-cold watermelon and a strong cup of coffee to wake you up for the drive home.
