Ultramarinos Demar
Mexico City, Mexico
Landlocked Mexico City is not best known for its seafood scene, but Ultramarinos Demar is the kind of restaurant that makes you imagine you’re living life on the seafront. First there’s the breezy atmosphere: smart expense account and special occasion lunches buzz in a space of green tiles and polished chrome, where iced crustacean platters land theatrically on slick tabletops. Then there’s the ultra-fresh bounty from the sea, which sings with saline zing under a blanket of garlicky butter, cocktail sauce, or citrus – or whatever else chef Lucho Martinez decides to throw at it. Doors close at 7pm, so plan to arrive for a late lunch that carries on through bottles of chilled white wine and a series of aquatic theatre, and wraps up in early evening with a wobbly, caramel-drenched flan – just like the rest, deliciously memorable.
