The Hotel Britomart

Auckland, New Zealand

High design and modern comfort meet unrivalled green credentials at this progressive New Zealand pad. Entering the scene in 2020 and set in an enviable location on Auckland’s Waitematā harbour, its quirky facade – a patchwork of 150,000 handmade bricks specked with odd-sized windows stretching 10 storeys – stands gutsily amid the converted warehouses and tree-lined lanes of the neighbourhood. As the country’s first Five Green Star hotel, its build and ethics are sustainable from the ground up. Within the glassy, light-filled space, sublime interiors offer fresh interpretations of local craftsmanship driven by reclaimed kauri driftwood and stoneware. With borrowings from Japanese and Scandi designways, the architectural vignette is softened by pink, sage and eucalyptus tones (from Earth-friendly paint no less), while art sways from Māori paintings to a craggy charcoal wall made from volcanic sand. Large-scale bedrooms offer up nooks aplenty alongside a library of local tomes, while top-tier Landing Suites come with their own terrace and secret gardens to soak up waterfront views. The area is known for its excellent food scene, but the industrial dining room and sustainable fish-first fare of in-house Kingi is worth exploring. Alongside friendly staff, the careful balancing of style and substance solidifies Hotel Britomart’s status as a masterpiece of eco luxe.
