Hot Shop

Oslo, Norway

Cheekily named after the sex shop that once stood on the site, this canteen-style bistro has become a modern classic in the trendy Grünerlokka neighbourhood. Stroll along the Akerselva River until you see its wooden benches, which are generally draped in cream rugs to stave of the chill and offer wonderful people watching opportunities. Inside, it’s raw yet refined with simple bunches of flowers and exposed metal pipes providing most of the decoration. Most of the restaurant only serves a surprise five-course tasting menu – modern, seasonal food with an extraordinary depth of flavour – but it is possible to order a few individual plates alongside some wine at the bar, a lovely, informal way to catch up with a friend. There is a large and erudite selection of low-intervention, European pours on offer including plenty by the glass. Time to get tippling.
