Quinta da Pacheca
Douro Valley, Portugal
Immersions don’t get much fuller than spending the night in a giant wine barrel pod, in the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. A giant porthole of a door looks out from your circular bed onto the vineyards of this sixteenth century estate, home to one of the original granite markers used to identify the area (from 1758), now a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can also enjoy this view from the spa offering high-tech treatments and Elemis products, or from the glass-fronted tasting room whilst enjoying one of numerous food and wine-pairing options. Elsewhere, there are cookery classes and art workshops in the atelier (with the artist-in-residence), whilst a harvest-time experience gets you knee-deep in grapes.
