Set on a corner plot on Loop Street, ANTHM is possibly the perfect neighbourhood bar. Vinyl crackles in the background, there’s a flicker of candlelight, and the bar staff extend a warm welcome (and craft some superlative drinks). It’s likely you’ll find owner Tetsuo Hasegawa behind the polished wooden bar, mixing one of his signatures: a tequila-based Beat-Nik, fragrant with African sage, or the Foggy Forest, with whiskey, porcini mushrooms and a swirl of mountain-cherry smoke. Born in Tokyo, Hasegawa made his name in New York, not least during his time as head bartender at the iconic Angel’s Share. Now based in Cape Town, he’s inspired by its landscapes and flavours, from aromatic fynbos honey to Durban masala spice. The bar food's made with the same skill and precision, whether it’s a calamari summer roll, an oxtail shoyu ramen, or a comforting bowl of kara-age chicken with a side of mango atchar.
