Salsify at the Roundhouse

Cape Town, South Africa

As far as settings go, you’d have to go some to top this Camps Bay spot. Tickled by the Atlantic and with Lion’s Head for its backdrop, you’ll find this cosy, contemporary restaurant within the historic curving foundations of an old 1700s guardhouse – a national monument given a fresh lease of life as one of Cape Town’s finest dining destinations. A romantic setting with retro edge – think colourful mid-century leather and velvet chairs meets crisp white linens and bold modern art across a trio of rooms – it plays host to an exemplary menu driven by a mantra of simplicity and local and foraged produce from land and sea. And when you learn that the big-hittting team behind it are Ryan Cole and The Test Kitchen’s Luke Dale-Roberts, it’s little wonder. Cole’s a master of restrained deliciousness, packing punch into every nature-inspired bite that comes out of the kitchen. Unpretentious and playful, six to ten courses let you experience the best of the region. Vying for attention, the likes of grapefruit cured sashimi with hibiscus pickled radish, smoked springbok with puffed sorghum and slow-cooked duck with pear hoisin and duck fat hash browns highlight the ultimate in modern presentation, though the ocean views from the convivial Sea Room are equally divine.
