Orangerie Restaurant
Franschhoek, South Africa
Well worth a visit for the stunning setting at the family-owned Le Lude winery alone, Orangerie is also an excellent stop for a relaxed meal in the Franschhoek Valley on South Africa's Western Cape. Restaurant owner and Le Gavroche-trained chef Nicolene Barrow serves classical French cuisine with contemporary and Asian twists, using the freshest ingredients from the Cape. Sit in the shade of huge white parasols on the pretty outside terrace and work your way through the a la carte menu, such as gruyere soufflé; duck liver parfait on warm toasted brioche; beef short-rib braised for seven hours; and toasted corn fritters with sour cream and smoked paprika salt. The sweet-toothed might want to book in for the morning and afternoon tea, for salted caramel profiteroles, raspberry macarons, lemonade madeleines, scones and sandwiches. There is a superb list of local wines, including, of course, Le Lude's naturally bottle-fermented sparkling wines.
