Els Casals

Barcelona, Spain

Set in the small town of Sagàs, about an hour’s drive north of Barcelona, fine-dining farmhouse restaurant Els Casals was opened in 2000 by chef Oriol Rovira and his partner Carolina Calvo Serra, who heads up the front-of-house. With their own, 200-acre farm being the source of much of the pork, poultry and vegetables that appear on the menu, the couple’s “close the circle” ethos places great value on the traceability of “zero miles” raw ingredients, and has led to the restaurant being awarded a Michelin green star (along with a regular Michelin star for Rovira’s cooking). Skip the à la carte and go for one of two tasting menus with wine pairings for the full experience, which might include hare, venison, foraged truffle and the signature sobrasada (raw, in-house-cured sausage, also available to buy to take home), served with tomato and honey. Rooms are available should you wish to stay overnight.
