Glimmering across the landscape, the rippled metal roof of Frank Gehry’s Hotel Marqués de Riscal heralds a seminal Riojan winery below. Such postmodernist flair juxtaposes the original nineteenth century bodega, its cellars guarding some of the oldest Rioja in the world, including the family’s very first vintage from 1862. Guests get to walk amongst this living history after touring the vineyards by foot, bike or horse. Surrounded by medieval villages, the estate also offers golf and paddle-tennis, recuperation coming in the form of Michelin-starred dining and a Caudalie Vinothérapie spa.
