This seventh generation, family-run hotel is set in sprawling grounds with views of the lake and the snow-capped Swiss Alps, belying the fact that you’re actually in the centre of Zurich. Indeed, you’d hardly know you were in a city at all. The hotel has evolved with the years, of course, but it still retains an old-school charm that’s hard to find these days. The park plays a leading role, whether you’re sitting in the shade of the heritage trees or learning about the 80,000 honey bees that reside here (their honey is delicious). In summer, cool down in one of the outdoor pools or climb aboard the hotel’s saloon boat for a spin around the glacial waters of the lake. It’s also the perfect jumping off point for alpine hikes and bike rides. As snow falls, head to the slopes for skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing. Either way, the hotel will welcome you back in a warm embrace. Rooms and suites are lavish, with contemporary-luxe decor, bespoke furniture and big spa-like bathrooms. Play ‘count the swans’, as most have amazing views of the lake. Before dinner, linger over a glass of wine on Marguita’s sun-dappled outdoor terrace overlooking the manicured lawns, before dining in the restaurant on a Mediterranean menu; cosy Le Hall, aka the living room, is the perfect spot for curling up for a quiet morning coffee and one of the exquisite cakes from the in-house patisserie.
