Gallery 20.5

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Highlighting the parallels between a painter’s art and a bartender’s cocktails, this Kaohsiung gallery contains a secret cocktail bar. The clue to finding it lies with Edward Hopper’s 1942 painting Nighthawks in the gallery, lit with a spotlight. Down a mysterious brick-lined corridor with checkerboard pattern on the floor, you’ll find an intimate space, walls similarly adorned with artwork, and with more exposed brick, black leather banquettes and wooden cabinets. Gallery 20.5, opened in 2021, takes a high-tech approach to its cocktails, which are deceptively simple in their elegant, minimalist appearance. The bar’s latest cocktail menu features a selection of signature drinks around the themes of music, painting and first impressions. The bar is also host to a series of eclectic music events. The numbers in the name, in case you’re wondering, are a nod to the secret Platform 9 3/4 from the Harry Potter series.
