Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand

As Bangkok’s hotel scene soars, so too does the Waldorf Astoria. Floating like apartments in the sky, near Lumphini Park, rooms entice a well-heeled clientele of discerning nature. It sits at the height of luxury in a hyper-modern skyscraper designed to represent a blooming magnolia flower. This is the work of André Fu, a dab hand at curating visual stories with a sense of calm and wonder – he masterminded The Upper House, ranked No.4 on The World’s Best Hotels 2023. Designed with recurring nods to the area’s culture and Thailand on a larger scale – with a little lavish New York art deco thrown in for good measure – soaring ceilings, honed marble, silk, bronze accents and curving lines are all accounted for. The 16th-storey pool, with its dramatic architectural canopy and city views, is standout. Spacious bedrooms bring forth a restorative colour palette of warm wood, cream and soft blues, with gentle Thai motifs. Travel higher and things amp up to a more maximalist aesthetic across the dining options between the 55th and 57th floors. Bull & Bear is a New York-style steakhouse with masculine edge, while The Loft is the kind of bar that could easily have been concocted – and indeed, frequented – by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
