Ciragan Palace Kempinski

Istanbul, Turkey

Ciragan Palace Kempinski allows you to live like an Ottoman Sultan, almost literally. Constructed in the mid-19th century as a palace for Sultan Abdulaziz, this marble landmark on the banks of the Bosphorus now caters to cosmopolitan travelers. One can even arrive the traditional way by boat to the compound’s private dock; a private helipad and a drive are also options. Regardless of vehicle, guests are welcomed by a brigade of staff and escorted through the tall palms, manicured lawns and rare botanicals. The palace sits atop a grand staircase, lording over these grounds and the river itself. Remodeled in 2023 by architect Mustafa Toner, the interiors feature modern elements but keep the focus on Istanbuls’s regal roots. Maroons, royal blue and grey marbles – a nod to traditional hammams – garnish the 317 rooms and suites. Amenities are handled by renowned Turkish pharmacist Atelier Rebul. Fine dining is available at Akdeniz by Esra Muslu, a destination for Mediterranean cuisine. Several more casual outlets allow the opportunity to take in the sunny gardens and indulge in some local culture, replete with locals wagering on backgammon and smoking hookahs.
