40 Maltby Street

London, UK

Located in a railway arch with trains rumbling overhead, 40 Maltby Street takes its food and drink cues from its surroundings: neighbouring Maltby Street market and Gergovie Wines, with which it shares the arch. The food is by-and-large British (smoked trout with egg mayonnaise and toast) with some influences from mainland Europe according to what’s in season (fried skate with sweetcorn, cos lettuce and girolle mushrooms, say), while the European wines from Gergovie are low-intervention and not everything is orange. Lunch is served towards the end of the week, though there are takeaway sandwiches and salads from the wine shop in the day.
