Hecate

Boston, US

The Greek deity Hecate (goddess of witchcraft, magic and necromancy) serves as namesake for this evocative, unmarked underground bar, where enigmatic black-and-gold decor sets a mood as dramatic as its cocktails. From the team behind upstairs restaurant Krasi, the size of the space (only 24 seats) allows for guests to have one-on-one conversations with the affable bartenders to find cocktails that best suit their mood. Each drink tells a story through its fantastical presentation, and while some of the wordplay on the leather-bound menu skews dangerously close to gimmicky – the bartenders are called “spirit guides” and bar snacks are labeled “offerings” – the concept is not an over-the-top Disney-esque haunt, but rather a spellbinding coven of mixology where the craft of modern cocktails is executed with style. Hecate is a bewitching addition to the Boston cocktails scene.
