Upscale home-style cooking with a warm Southern drawl – that’s the deal at this large, light-filled restaurant stationed in Chicago’s famed Hyde Park area. Taking a corner spot close to the University of Chicago, people flock here for inspired heritage dishes and welcolming, unpretentious hospitality. From an open kitchen, chef Erick Williams filters some 25 years’ experience in European fine dining through the lens of America's historical foodways. The result? Refined nostalgia and honest menu that sings with the soul and flavour of the South. Split into small rations, large rations, extra rations and sweet rations, guests are encouraged to make the experience their own. The bedrocks of Southern cooking all accounted for: fluffy biscuits with pimento cheese, Geechie stone-ground grits, chicken gizzards perched on dirty rice with chicken gravy, cornbread with homemade honey butter and shrimp with green tomatoes in crisp cornmeal. Noteworthy mains include blackened catfish with Carolina gold rice and short ribs with collared greens, while on the sweet front, banana pudding and peach cobbler are a win. The bar offers and truncated happy hour menu of snacks and drinks, while a rolling programme of takeovers is worth keeping an eye on.
