Gramercy Tavern is a restaurant of two halves. First, there's the Dining Room, an upscale space where guests are served one of New York's most celebrated prix-fixe menus. Second, there's the more casual Tavern, a hip bar area offering an equally tempting a la carte selection. Which should you choose? Well, that all depends on whether you want to feel like part of the city's buzzy, electric action, or whether you want all that action to revolve around you. Executive chef Michael Anthony is the creative force behind both offerings, and his exacting standards are evident throughout. Expect seasonal American cuisine shaped by subtle French influence, whether it's an elegant Dining Room plate of hanger steak with cauliflower, dandelion greens and pickled shallots, or a more approachable (but nonetheless delectable) Tavern burger with potato chips and smoked onion aioli.
