Raw brick walls, counter seating, easy-going staff and blue-and-white tableware belies the level of the dishes at this cavernous Flatiron failsafe. The concept follows that of an "osteria emiliana", with chef Stefano Secchi at the helm, and whose time at Best of the Best restaurant, Osteria Francescana, is tangible. Dishes proudly doff their cap to Northern Italy, but ultimately, while a regional pasta degustation is on the menu, this place isn’t about overt fine dining consumed amid hushed tones. Start with a lively negroni and an order of voluminous gnocco fritto and five ages of Parmigiano Reggiano as you peruse the menu. While there are plenty of tempting veg and meat dishes, remember, you’re here for the pasta first and foremost. Noteworthy picks include Grandma Walking Through Forest in Emilia: a cappelletti verdi with roasted, sautéed leeks and black mushroom purée.
