Raw brick walls, counter seating, easy-going staff and blue-and-white tableware belies the level of the dishes that emerge from the kitchen at this cavernous Flatiron failsafe. Conceptualised as an ‘Osteria Emiliana’, at the helm is Stefano Secchi, whose time at Best of the Best restaurant, Osteria Francescana, is tangible. As such, dishes proudly doff their cap to Northern Italy, but ultimately, while a regional pasta degustation is on the menu, this place isn’t about overt fine dining consumed amid hushed tones. Start with a lively negroni and an order of voluminous gnocco fritto and five ages of Parmigiano Reggiano as you peruse the menu. While there are plenty of tempting veg and meat dishes, remember, you’re here for the pasta first and foremost. Noteworthy picks include spaghettoni e vongole with a rich seafood-laden sauce enlivened by gremolata; rich rabbit and fennel ragù and pockets of anolini di Parma drenched in decadent Parmesan sauce.
