Maison Passerelle

New York, US

A meal at Maison Passerelle, in the heart of New York’s Financial District, is a sound investment. Housed within the glittering Printemps department store, all sleek glass and soaring ceilings, the restaurant brings an injection of Euro chic to an already prestigious setting. With its luminous stained glass and majestic frescoes, Maison Passerelle got the glamour memo. Chef Gregory Gourdet fuses classic French cuisine with modern techniques and ingredients from the French diaspora. The seasonal prix-fixe menu makes for eclectic reading, with starters such as salt-cod fritters and citrus-cured kampachi fish rubbing shoulders with daily oysters and a caviar service that includes tempting additions such as sour coconut cream, pickled onions and plantain chips. Crowd-pleasing mains have included glazed duck with pineapple and tamarind jus, and even steak frites gets a playful rethink with coffee jus and Creole ketchup. Cocktails are equally inventive – the Du Riz, featuring white rum, sake and banana is one to try – and there’s an impressive selection of sparkling wines by the glass, alongside zero-proof cocktails and a robust wine list.
