Centrolina

Washington DC, US

A kitchen and dining room adorned with interesting textures (metal accents, polished concrete, exposed brick and soft leather) rather than frippery embody this restaurant's food philosophy too. Amy Brandwein – who trained under Roberto Donna at his Galileo empire – prepares authentic, regional Italian food driven by seasonality. Her pastas demonstrate technical ability and visual flare: think pappardelle tossed with scallion, strawberries, fennel and parmigiano and ribbons of neri shot through with squid ink and soft shell crab. Other highlights are many, including fish of the day grilled in a terracotta-clad wood oven, the desserts by pastry chef Mary Mendoza and a wine list featuring unique grape varietals. Like what you're eating? Stock up on salumi, olive oils, anchovies and other delicacies at the in-house Mercato deli counter.
