Berenjak
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The story of Berenjak begins in London, when founder-chef Kian Samyani opened his first restaurant in Soho in 2018 to make his childhood memories of Iran come to life on the plate, specifically the kabab shop near his grandfather’s house in Tehran. The ‘kababi’ was an immediate hit and has since seen outposts open around the world, including in Dubai’s Dar Wasl Mall. As with the other branches, the decor is eclectic, with rugs on the floor, Middle Eastern art on the walls and glittering chandeliers above. Start with a sharbat – a Persian cocktail made from fruit juice, flower petals or herbs. Warm pillowy breads are perfect for mopping up the mazeh, a creamy black chickpea hummus; sour yoghurt with cucumber, mint and green raisins; smoky coal-cooked aubergine; and black truffle olivieh (a twist on a traditional chicken and potato salad). But it’s the flame-grilled kebabs which dominate the conversation, the flavour-packed skewers loaded with marinated prawns or chunks of lamb, chicken or beef. The baklava ice cream sandwich is the perfect full-stop.
