Salt (Kite Beach)

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

A decade ago, Dubai’s food scene centred around fine dining and mall culture, until Amal Al Marri and Deem Albassam decided they could provide the antidote. Enter Salt: a vintage airstream whose tiny kitchen produces big burgers. As one of Dubai’s first meals-with-wheels concepts to tap into the now-global food truck trend, it was designed to do away with formalities and get people outside again. Now, its convenient location and straightforward menu has made it a go-to for kitesurfers, swimmers and sunbathers, enticed away from the water by wagyu beef burgers, soft serve and super-sized sodas. Its popularity was such that a year after opening, Salt erected a permanent, air-conditioned ‘beach house’ terrace, a welcome refuge from the heat in high summer and an easy-going meeting place. The menu is concise and uncomplicated, but Salt still manages to indulge guilty pleasures with its chicken fried in Cheetos, cereal latte and pop-pumping playlist.
