Vibey mezcal haunt with killer margaritas

Opened in 2019 by Stelios Papadopoulos and George Kavaklis, Barro Negro has secured its place within Athens' cocktail scene with a clear focus on agave spirits and a modern take on Mexican drinking culture. The approach is informed by the team's ongoing research and repeated trips to Mexico, reflected in a back bar that feels both carefully built and personal.

The menu moves between classics and more layered signatures, with highlights including Mayans' Punch, blending tequila reposado with passion fruit, coffee, tepache and milk whey, and Los Abuelos, a savory mix of mezcal, blanco tequila, olive oil, fennel and herbal liqueur. Margaritas remain a constant, supported by a selection of more than 200 tequilas alongside a wide range of mezcal. As the evening builds, the bar fills quickly, with a crowd that comes as much for the atmosphere as for the drinks.
