Mexico City
Guests to Bijou Drinkery Room are advised that the password to the speakeasy is a simple smile. Indeed, this Mexico City jewel aims to bring joy to their chic guests. Stepping from the neighbouring food hall into the intimate space, hip guests are embraced by velvet curtains and a modern, Piet Mondrian-inspired bar. Splashes of stained glass warm up the low lit, mid-century vibe. However, the warmest hospitality is delivered by a talented bar team intent on catering to every taste.
To better fill sippers’ desires, Bijou employs a unique concept: the menu arrives in the form of a Rubik’s Cube. The cube’s centre squares represent base spirits, while other squares list flavours such as cherries, citrus, hot peppers and textures such as cream. Guests are asked to twist the toy, determining their preferred combination, then the team goes to work, crafting bespoke riffs on Golden Age drinks. For traditionalists, a small printed menu is also available. The culinary program maintains the high standard with a light menu riffing on local standards such as grilled octopus and empanaditas. If unsure, the namesake Bijou cocktail is always available and a brilliant bet. Created by 19th century bartending pioneer Harry Johnson, the legendary libation combines gin, vermouth, and herbal liqueur.
