Al Fondo
Buenos Aires, Argentina
In an artfully half-restored historic house in Nuñez – all textured plaster and bare bricks – Piedra Pasillo Al Fondo is one of the city’s most interesting places to eat given its inventive menus. Climb the stairs to find its speakeasy bar, the darkly atmospheric Al Fondo, which takes an equally creative tack when it comes to drinks. Behind the bar, backlit bottles and jars lend the air of an apothecary’s shop: here, though, they’re filled with home-made distillates, syrups, oils and infusions, used to great effect on the compact cocktail list. The team take the classics as a starting point, then twist them into something new and unexpected – a raspberry-scented Little Clover, perhaps, with a hint of dill, or a frozen margarita whose ingredients include green chilli and banana peel. The bar snacks are exceptional, so a casual drink – it’s no reservations – can easily segue into dinner.
