Ace Hotel Sydney

Sydney, Australia

This Surry Hills bolthole is far from run of the mill. Calling the old Tyne House brick factory home and launched in 2022, it is Ace Hotels' first foray in the southern hemisphere. Rooted in place, Aussie designers Flack Studio have pulled in references to Sydney and Australia’s broader cultural narrative throughout: an installation of ceramic bricks frames the reception desk, there’s an extensive collection of First Nation and local art, iconic Uluru is redolent in the ochre stairway, raw materials draw upon an industrial past. It’s all underpinned by a sense of the edgy, free-thinking Seventies spirit the Surry Hills neighbourhood is known for. The result is a playfully design-forward modern-heritage space that rises 18 storeys. Four restaurants and bars (including rooftop Kiln, which serves a genre-defying menu headed up by Mitch Orr) and a busy calendar of art, culinary and cultural events enliven the scene. The warehouse-like lobby, with its low-slung seating and abundant glass, is the ideal people-watching spot, while rooms drenched in a cinematic colour palette and textural straw wall panels are both generous and enveloping. Consider it your home away from home and get ready to bed down.
