In the early 20th century, Australian beach culture imploded and swimming clubs popped up along Sydney’s shoreline. One was the Bathers’ Pavilion at Balmoral beach in Mosman, a Spanish Mission-style building designed by architect Alfred H Hale. The heritage-listed waterfront venue is now home to multiple dining options, including the award-winning main restaurant. Decor is all easy-breezy nautical charm – blue-and-white striped linens, custom furniture and curated artworks – though the picture that will catch your eye is the one framed in the floor-to-ceiling windows of the ocean beyond. Don’t let the views detract from the cooking; chef Aaron Ward and his team take a fresh approach to coastal flavours, working closely with the region’s reputed fishers and farmers. Dishes from the open kitchen might include steamed crab with a dashi custard; cod with a zingy chermoula; or smoked duck rich with cherry, radicchio and liquorice root. Alternatively, push the boat out with the tasting menu. The 350-strong wine list spans Australian and international regions, with a French focus.
