Konstantin Filippou
Vienna, Austria
Nudging the Donaukanal river, it's easy to miss the muted façade of this laid-back restaurant, despite it being the magnum opus of Greek-Austrian chef Konstantin Filippou. The monochrome dining room, which seats up to 35 diners, gives little away – except, of course, that you can see straight into the kitchen, where dried herbs hang from the ceiling. With stints at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Michel Roux Jr's Le Gavroche and Arzak in San Sebastián under his apron strings, Filippou's dishes are a happy medley of Austrian produce and Mediterranean heritage. To reflect his love of the water, expect a fish and seafood-leaning menu. Alongside all the main players like langostino, sardines, mussels and red prawns, you'll likely spy dishes that incorporate the likes of amur carp, crayfish, whitefish, catfish and zander. Think brandade with caviar or fish soup with root vegetables and aioli at lunch; sardines with a mussel remoulade and beer radish; or dry-aged salmon with eel, salted carrot and sauce Albufeira for dinner. Natural wines are the order of the day in this authentic, relaxed Viennese favourite.
