Hertog Jan at Botanic Sanctuary

Antwerp, Belgium

After closing the original Hertog Jan in 2018, chef Gert de Mangeleer and business partner Joachim Boudens have returned with another stunning concept in the centre of urban Antwerp. Set in the oasis of calm that is the Botanic Sanctuary, diners sample the delights of the tasting menu in a true garden setting, replete with beehives, herb garden and towering greenhouse. Open only two weeks per month and offering 12 covers at a time, a seat at Hertog Jan is western Europe’s next hot ticket. The transient multi-course tasting menu is always a well-kept secret, but may feature the spectacular ‘caviar explosion’, with sturgeon dashi and trout eggs on sourdough, or confit cod with melted tomato and courgette. For a more casual bite, walk around the corner to de Mangeleer’s Bar Bulot, the friendly à la carte brasserie on the same site.
