Janeiro Hotel
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Cast your mind to Rio’s vibrant beaches and you’ll likely think of Copacabana and Ipanema, but it would be remiss to not also mention Leblon – the third major stretch of sand in the southern zone and considered a little more upscale and quieter than its neighbours. Rising above this expanse of golden sand is the Janeiro Hotel, the creation of Brazilian creative and entrepreneur Oskar Metsavaht. There are just five rooms per floor (the hotel is 18 storeys in total), which means nothing feels crammed. Minimalism is the name of the game, with a predominantly white-and-pale-wood palette allowing the azure Atlantic, framed in the big windows, to take centre stage – many of the rooms also have a view of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue standing atop Corcovado mountain. Light floods the second-floor restaurant, where chic Cariocas join hotel residents for light lunches and candlelit seafood dinners, while the ground-level eatery has more of a bistro-brasserie buzz. The top-floor Little Pool Bar and Varanda, adjacent to the infinity-edge pool, is an invitation to drink caipirinhas and watch the sun go down.
