Naga Rio

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Located within the upmarket Village Hall shopping centre, Naga Rio is the Rio de Janeiro branch of 30-year-old family-run Japanese restaurant Nagayama, which started in São Paulo when former professional tennis player Mário Nagayama returned from the US to Brazil and turned his side hustle into a business. While the original Nagayama is traditional, Naga Rio is a more modern restaurant that attracts a young crowd for chef Raul Ono’s delicious sushi and sashimi platters and top-notch sake. While there are plenty of à la carte options, it’s worth going all-out for one of the sushi selections, such as the Combinaga [Combination], with 33 pieces. You’ll quickly forget you’re in a shopping centre; Naga has all the trimmings of a chic Japanese restaurant, with low lighting and a stunning, long sushi counter whose back wall is decorated with beautiful pottery.
