Bar Saint-Denis

Montreal, Canada

Although it only opened in 2022, this place feels like it’s always been there: a casually excellent neighbourhood bistro with terrific taste in wine (largely natural and biodynamic). Locals flirt at the long, low-lit zinc bar or settle in for supper, chosen from a menu that defies easy categorisation. There might be homemade flatbreads with pistachio-dusted labneh; smoked trout on Melba toast; or sweet local scallops, served with seasonal plums. In truth, it’s whatever appeals to its co-owners David Gaulthier and Emily Homsy, who met as chefs at the iconic Au Pied de Cochon. It’s easy to flit between small plates here, though the mains are equally accomplished: duck magret, perhaps, or monkfish with Grenobloise sauce. Desserts are executed with the same self-assurance, including (if you’re lucky) a superb profiterole.
