  • No.44 North America's 50 Best Restaurants 2025

The debut from a Korean-Canadian husband-and-wife team, Mhel brings Japanese-Korean plates and a strong sake list to the global restaurant scene of Toronto's Bloorcourt neighbourhood. Named after the Jeju word for anchovy – which, in Korea, symbolises culinary tradition – the restaurant's daily-changing menu relies on Ontario producers and select imports: a standout is the sogogi, a hearty slice of Australian wagyu, cooked to perfection and brushed with sweet soy-ginger sauce, alongside a side of ssam, a perilla-leaf-wrap. Save room for the creme caramel, accented by a toasted maple syrup glaze. In addition to a wide array of Japanese sake, zero-proof sparkling teas round out the drinks list – best enjoyed from the 12-seat open kitchen counter.
