With its gilded ceilings, carved woodwork, hanging burnished chandeliers and staff uniforms emblazoned with rippling gold dragons, the Chinese Room cosplays an elaborate, romanticised view of Asian regality. From drinks team Shuai Yang and Ke Chen, the bar – which is apparently inspired by Brighton’s Royal Pavilion, built in the 18th century for George VI – is kitted out with decor such as antiques, porcelain and a fireplace. While cocktails keep their roots in the Western classics, they also incorporate plenty of local produce such as apricot, rose, and Ningxia red wine, and are often served in retro crockery for the full Chinoiserie-coded effect. In historic Chengdu, so popular on the tourist trail, Chinese Room expands minds and inspires thoughtful reflection around the flow of art and influences both East and West. Crucially, the drinks are pretty good, too.
