Lou Shang

Shanghai, China

Famous for its luxurious Cantonese-style yellow broth hot pot, diners queue for hours to get in the door. With its hot pink tablecloths and cobbled together decor, don’t expect fine dining, but be prepared to pay the price for popularity. The renowned silky broth, however, is rather worth it, made as it is from fish maw, chicken and abalone cooked at molten temperatures. Everything from slices of fat-streaked rib-eye steak to fresh and meaty shrimp, live abalone and salt-and-pepper fried corn go in to the mix. Indulgent, rich and pricey, but it’s something of a Shanghai gastronomic experience.
