The Middle House

Shanghai, China

The Middle House does detail like few others. Encased by a cluster of architectural bamboo in Shanghai’s fashionable Dazhongli neighbourhood, it comes courtesy of the same team behind Hong Kong’s The Upper House – No. 4 on The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2023 list. Residing in two curvaceous towers that act as a beacon of modern hospitality, it shines the spotlight on fusion aesthetics with architect Piero Lissoni crafting a holistic scene that sits somewhere in the middle of design vernaculars amid some of the city’s last-standing shikumen buildings. Borrowing from both Chinese and Italian cornerstones and mastering scale, it’s a sumptuously composed place of contrast. Bold yet muted, large yet boutiquey, bright yet clandestine, modern yet heritage. A huge Venetian chandelier welcomes a fashionable clientele to the jade lobby. In typical ‘house’ style, it’s all juxtaposed with an exciting curation of art from Shanghai and beyond; think large textural works, ceramics and sculptures. Of the 213 light-filled guestrooms (all warm neutrals and black marble bathrooms), 102 are serviced residences for longer stays, or those seeking more space. A cutting-edge subterranean spa and pool, three standout restaurants – including contemporary Chinese Sui Tang Li – and bar complete the offering.
