Among the glassy high-rises and frenetic energy of Shanghai, the setting of Scilla provides a refreshing departure. Coddled within a brick-fronted, art deco-style mansion – one that looks like it could have been lifted straight from the Italian Riviera – a kitchen headed up by Tuscan-born chef Stefano Bacchelli works to transport its diners. Named after the terracotta-hued Calabrian fishing village, Scilla oozes easy sophistication with its large, sunshine flooded windows, crisp white tablecloths and unbuttoned but polished plates – most often starring local Chinese produce. For example, Provençal bouillabaisse and rouille is reinvented with yellow croaker from Taizhou; a version you’ll surely never stumble across in Marseille. As expected, the wine cellar is stocked with Mediterranean vinous gems and for those with the appropriate budget there will certainly be a memorable bottle worth the splurge.
