Fu 1015
Shanghai, China
Push open the door of this historic colonial villa which sits serenely in the middle of the upscale Jing'an district, and you'll feel as if you've travelled back in time to the 1920s (it was once the home of one of the city's wealthiest bankers). Diners are seated in private rooms filled with velvet and dark wood furniture, each with its own saloon, making this the ideal spot for private business meetings (perhaps to be rounded off in the cigar lounge) or intimate celebratory dinners. Respect is paid to classic Shanghainese cuisine, with a little Cantonese influence sprinkled through the flavour-filled sharing plates. Locality and seasonality are paramount. Hairy crab marinated in yellow rice wine sits alongside wok-sautéed river shrimps; duck is marinated and deboned, before being stuffed with shrimp paste and pine nuts and deep-fried; and pork belly comes with a black truffle sauce. Dessert might be minced date cake and cashew seaweed puffed pastry or soy ice cream with crispy dough sticks.
