Alois Dallmayr

Munich, Germany

Behind the butter yellow Baroque exterior of Dallmayr’s expansive façade lies a veritable labyrinth of food. This Munich delicatessen store is a stalwart in the city. Open since 1700, its name is now synonymous with good eating across Germany and further field. The traditional, wood-panelled ground floor hosts a cornucopia of counters filled with glossy chocolates, exquisitely prepared canapés, cold cuts, Black Forest butchery, regional cheeses and more. Elsewhere a distinguished café and bistro serves the brand’s well-regarded coffee and there’s also a seafood-focused bar and grill. Upstairs sits the brand’s pièce de resistance: the stylish, silk- wallpapered fine-dining restaurant. Here, executive chef Rosina Ostler utilises the store’s globe-stretching bounty to craft an exquisite set menu of 17 dishes which zigzag from far-flung seas – char, calamansi and sweet potato – to the deer-filled, berry-rich Black Forest near home. A lunch menu offers a compressed (and less expensive) iteration of the evening offering. Seek out sommelier Julien Morlat for recommendations from an ample Old World bottle collection.
