Botrini's Restaurant
Athens, Greece
Botrini's, a comfortable restaurant in a former primary school on the outskirts of central Athens, is the dream come true of Ettore Botrini. The chef trained widely in Europe and went on to become head chef of the renowned family restaurant Etrusco in Corfu, before embarking on his Athenian adventure. The talented young team in the kitchen were recruited through a television series, working together to present food that references the chef's personal memories and wider Italian culture. Before each course, a card is presented to the table detailing the story behind the dish, whether that be a piece of childhood nostalgia or tales of daily life. There are two tasting menus: Varkada (designed to take the diner on 'a peaceful boat trip') and Peripatos ('a leisurely walk'). These might include Before Fasting (calf tail prepared to a traditional recipe from Trappist monks); pappardelle with blushing slithers of duck; or Cycladic Fish Tavern, a gutsy mix of langoustines, mussels à la marinière and vegetables.
