Akra
Athens, Greece
Akra, the brainchild of renowned chefs Yiannis Loukakis and Spyros Pediaditakis, is many things to many people. Aesthetes come to swoon at the layout; architect Myrto Kiourti has transformed the mid-century building into a multi-functioning space, with an open kitchen and tables downstairs and a private events space on the mezzanine. Bread lovers arrive early to pick up their daily sourdough and pastries, made fresh in the on-site bakery. Though the menu changes daily, nearly everything is smoked, grilled or roasted over the open fire and ingredients are sourced from small Greek farms. In the evenings, hip Athenians fill the pine-and-marble tables for seasonal signatures and house specialties such as crayfish with white taramasalata; pasta with black pork; and dusky grouper tartare.
